The Japan Market
Japan has the second largest healthcare market in the world with a national medical expenditure of £256 billion in 2012 which showed a record-high in terms of both level and growth rate. Due to the fast ageing population, the demand for unique, sophisticated and highly technical assistive and care products has been on the rise.
The Japanese medical devices market is also the world's second largest worth approx. £16 billion in 2011, 44.4% of which is reliant on imported products. The Japanese government has placed an importance on growing healthcare and medical industries under the government’s growth strategy.
A review of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law (PAL) is in process, which is expected to ease some of the complicated regulatory procedures and this will work favourably to British medical devices suppliers.
Opportunities exist with advanced and innovative products in areas such as: R&D and technology out-licensing, diagnostics systems and equipment, novel medical treatments, preventive healthcare and infection control related products.
